Virginia’s Hybrid Tax Roll Call List
Imagine this: A
middle aged woman, out of being home with the kids for 8 years, has finally
found a full time job in an accounting firm.
Being from the Midwest, she is accustomed to quietly finding the point
of moderation, raised to keep her head down and be “seen but not heard.” Her husband, a 2nd generation
Hispanic, has given her a name that identifies as some kind of Spanish, and her
name plate was placed by Facilities on the outside of her cubicle just six
months earlier. Her firm has recently
merged into another firm, and for the past six months everyone who sat around
her has been terminated or jumped ship.
When the head of HR comes in from the other office, people close their
doors.
One day, a new Regional Director comes in to use one of the
many empty offices. The middle-aged
Midwestern lady keeps her head down to her computer screen in her quiet little
cubicle tucked away, absorbed in a project, working diligently as even checking
Gmail might jeopardize her job. Yet she
is aware there is someone in that empty office, and it’s not the head of
HR. She breathes a little deeper.
One of the few remaining co-workers asks her if she met the
new Regional Director. She replies no, she’s been busy on the current project. A little while later he appears at her
cubicle and smiles. She smiles
back. He looks at her name plate on her
cubicle wall, then at her horn-rimmed glasses, her outfit, and says,
“Shit. You’re a fucking Liberal, aren’t
you.” Not a question, mind you.
She gets flustered and replies the first thing that comes to
her mind: “Nice to meet you, too” or so she thinks. She tries to steer the conversation away from
politics, and he subsequently asks her for help connecting to the internet with
his new computer since he is not at his home office. She locks her screen and goes to help
him. She attempts to joke with him,
hoping to relieve the tension.
Days later, she finds herself walking down the hall to the
kitchen with him. “Fine day today, isn’t it?
It’s been such a cool April.
Those fucking Liberals keep talking about Global Warming – what a bunch
of bullshit.”
She stops in her tracks and breathes. She replies, “I hear two issues: one is scientific, the other is
political. I prefer to have the
scientific conversation. In fact, I
refuse to have the political one.”
He replies, “It IS Political. All of it.
Global Warming is complete bullshit created by the left. I could send you loads of articles about it.” She stops him again. (Breathes.)
“I am not really interested in any articles that are about
politics. I would look at scientific
studies, but no politics and no conjecture.” She replied.
By the end of the day there was an article from a
conservative opinion page, sent by the Regional Director, with absolutely no
studies cited.
This story took place verbatim in the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Today it was announced that
Virginia passed the Hybrid Sales Tax bill into law.
Today’s list is not self generated. Below are the Congressional representatives
who voted for the law that says if you’re buying a Hybrid, you must pay an
extra tax since in the life of the car you will buy less gas.
It also says to Auto Manufacturers, “Your innovation will be
charged to your customers.” And it says
to the auto dealers in Virginia, “Selling Hybrids is discouraged in the
Commonwealth of Virginia.”
The bill was sponsored by 16 Republicans. It was voted into law by 36 Republicans and
28 Democrats, and 1 Independent. While
30 Republicans dissented, only 4 Democrats also dissented. I hesitated to report these numbers in the
interest of bipartisanship, but the numbers alone say a lot.
Who is your representative, Virginians? If you have an opinion on their vote, please
go to www.Virginia.gov and find their
page, then send them an email. Because
when they made that vote, they THOUGHT THEY WERE REPRESENTING YOUR VOICE. But on the website, it actually says it is
the “Governor’s recommendation” so who they’re actually representing is
Governor McConnell.
Be heard. Contact
your representative.
